American Schools are in Crisis

If current trends persist, the nationwide shortfall of qualified teachers could reach 200,000 by 2025. Here are some contributing factors:

Schools are short twice as many teachers as pre-pandemic times

District enrollment is falling

Existing teachers have to pick up the slack; burnout is an issue

There is a lack of fully qualified applicants

Salary and/or benefits are lacking compared to other careers

We Empower Principals to Address this

Crisis in their Schools!

In this Online Field Guild & Resource Backpack we will look at:

How now is a crucial time to make decisions about the future for our teachers and education system in helping you to:

Provide incentives targeted at attracting and retaining more teachers

Grow your own programs to improve district hiring practices by emphasizing adopting earlier and more-aggressive recruitment

Cultivate a safe, diverse, and accepting environment for educators to grow

Create individualized growth paths and resources for educators

Provide educators with measurable data for better planning around professional development

Intentionally recruit, hire, support, grow, and retain new teachers

Celebrate all the time!!

Fall: The Beginning

(August-October)

Research

  • Graph of a New Teacher’s Year -Emotional

  • When reality sets in

Best Practice - (providing support for emotional, physical and intellectual growth)

  • Promote healthy habits; encourage teachers to find a source of exercise

  • Classroom management is the most important component at this point

  • Make sure to have new teachers set up communication practices right away to keep parents informed about what students are learning, how parents can help, and how to get help from the teacher

  • Building relationships with students and families

Principal to Principal - Practical Tips

  • Classroom set up is student friendly (depending on age level)

  • Set up a monthly meeting, with no formal agenda, to allow for connection, communication, clarification

  • Create a culture where it’s expected that teachers ask you questions and share their needs. Give them sticky notes, check ins, index cards

  • Be positive, leave feedback and be in the classroom daily

  • Assign a Mentor teacher for each new teacher. Meet with Mentors monthly to gauge the temperature of new teacher stress

Calendering

  • New Student Orientation/Meet the Teacher

  • Back to School Night

  • Prep for Parent Teacher Conferences

  • Prepare for Halloween and classroom parties

  • Share your assessment calendar and expectations

  • When are your interim reports and report cards due? Tell teachers grading expectations WAY ahead of time

  • Make sure teachers know your school/district policy about grading and holiday rules (some holidays begin at sundown and we must be sensitive to not assigning HW or having events on those days

Celebrating

  • Create certificates to celebrate the first week of school; first month of school

  • Highlight each new teacher monthly via school-wide newsletter

  • Celebrate small steps, find something to celebrate each month on each new teacher that is unique to that educator

Winter: The Tough Times

(November-February)

Research

  • Graph of a New Teacher’s Year -Emotional

Best Practice

  • This is one of the toughest times of the year. Be honest with teachers. Emotions are running high.

  • Make sure teachers are keeping acceptable hours (how late are they staying)

  • Keep your calendar up to date with time to pull new teachers together at least 1x each month

  • Purchase small items (think Dollar store) - erasers (to put in their mailbox with a note that says, “I know today was difficult...so erase the day and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.”) paperclips (“I know it’s hard to keep things together, but you are doing an awesome job!”) rubberbands (“I’m here for you. I know it’s hard to band everything all at once, but never give up - you got this!”)

Principal to Principal - Practical Tips

  • Do you need to bring in someone outside of the school building to observe (if possible). For example: Reading resource, Math resource, ECED, content specialists

  • Continue to build your culture of care. Are you still providing feedback? Are you celebrating the small steps (less office referrals, leaving earlier than normal, laughter, small notices of leadership {speaking up during a staff meeting/ PD}

Calendering

  • Holidays (Thanksgiving, winter holidays)

  • Fostering sensitivity to family situations (foster children, incarcerated parents, etc.

  • Look for something fun for new teachers to look forward to (lunch in your office; snack & a soda afterschool) etc. during the months of January and February

Celebrating

  • First quarter/ first semester celebrating (certificates with a small token….think their favorite candybar) during a faculty meeting

  • First quarter report cards/ parent conferences - celebrate this accomplishment!

Hi, I am Rachel Amstutz

Principal

Professor, Mentor, Owner and CEO A to Z Education Consulting, LLC

In April 2021, I launched A to Z Education Consulting as a way to expand my ability to contribute to solving education challenges and upgrading the educational experiences of children and families.

My focus and passion is on principal coaching and development. With strong principals at the helm of our schools, the future is bright!

But the job is big and exhausting and complex and challenging and draining ... and many strong leaders don't stay in the role long enough to impact positive change. That needs to change!

We must support our school leaders and grow their skill set to meet the many, wide ranging demands required of them.

My experiences over the past two decades include:
Principal
Assistant Principal
Instructional Specialist
Field Manager for Discovery Education
Middle School Math Teacher and Department Chair
Elementary School Teacher, eCoach, AfterSchool Title 1 Coordinator

I am very excited to connect with you and to support your education needs in anyway possible!

Hi, I am Tammy Scott

Principal

Principal, Mentor, Founding Partner A to Z Education Consulting, LLC

One year ago, I “retired” after 17 years as an Elementary School Principal. Literally the very next day, I began my journey where I started, with teachers.

For the last year I have mentored teachers during the most challenging year education has ever embraced, yet each of them stayed strong throughout the year and yes…each is coming back for year 2!

It is my belief that our teachers need to feel supported, they need to have structure, they need to be challenged, they need to take risks and they need to know that while a child’s academic needs are a must and will always be measured, that building their own positive character lays the groundwork for what tomorrow will bring.

My experience over the last 32 years include:

  • Administration Mentor
  • Primary Consultant
  • Mentor Teacher
  • Principal (17 years)
    {FISH Philosophy trained, Happiness Advantage trained, Power of the Positive Leadership (Jon Gordon) trained}
  • Assistant Principal (1 year)
  • Resource Teacher (Mentor Teacher) 2 years
  • Elementary School teacher, Primary Lead Teacher

I am extremely excited to partner with you and support your school in your quest for success and finding, as well as celebrating, your SPARKLES of achievement!
